Server Consolidation
Server consolidation is an immediate solution to reducing the ever-increasing
total cost of ownership (TCO). Whether organisations choose to aggregate
servers in a single location, combine existing systems, or improve
centralised control, consolidation represents an opportunity to
cut back the TCO and simplify system management.
TCO rises high above the cost of acquisition. An independent survey,
by Gartner Group, has shown that most business managers are unaware
of how much their information systems cost them in the long-term.
Maintenance, repair, support, training and upgrade costs can amount
to almost 80% of the total ownership costs for a basic server. So
in theory the fewer servers companies can run, the better.
But to get the most out of consolidation, an enterprise must plan
ahead to develop the proper strategy. Does it make better sense
to have a larger number of cheap, commodity servers, or a smaller
number of higher-end, more powerful servers? The answer is that
it depends on your situation and your applications, and only an
analysis of a company’s strategic needs and business goals
will provide the solution.
TSDP can assist in all aspects of server consolidation from needs
assessment and architecture design through implementation to management
security and process issues associated with the move to the new
consolidated infrastructure.
